A stud-frame shop is more than a storage structure — it's a true building designed for strength, comfort, and long-term use. At We Build Your Shop, our stud-frame shops are built for owners who want something solid, straight, and dependable. This construction method delivers the durability of a traditional building while offering the flexibility to customize layouts, finishes, and future upgrades.
Built for Canadian Winters
Engineered roof truss systems, proper bracing, and durable exterior materials withstand wind, heavy snow loads, and wide seasonal temperature swings.
Year-Round Comfort
Stud-frame construction allows for proper insulation depth and clean interior assemblies, resulting in a shop that can be comfortably heated and used year-round.
Customize Your Layout
Interior walls, partitions, mezzanines, and future additions are straightforward with stud framing. Plan your space the way you need it — now and down the road.
Versatile by Design
Well suited for garages, heated workspaces, equipment storage, hobby buildings, barndominiums, and small business operations.
Why Choose It
- ✓Easy to insulate and finish interior walls
- ✓Standardized building practice — widely understood
- ✓Cost-effective for smaller to mid-size spans
- ✓Best option for barndominiums with living quarters
- ✓Wide range of finishing options on 2×6 or 2×8 walls
Trade-Offs
- —Less efficient for very large clear spans compared to steel or post frame
- —More framing labor than post frame for equivalent size
Stud Frame Use Cases
Stud frame is the most versatile construction method we offer. If you're building something that needs to be heated, finished, or lived in — stud frame is the way to go.
Heated Workshops
Year-round comfort for woodworking, auto repair, fabrication, and hobbies. 2×6 or 2×8 wall cavities give you room for serious insulation — up to R35 in the walls and R50+ in the ceiling.
Barndominiums
The #1 choice for shop-plus-living-quarters builds. Stud framing creates clean, code-compliant interior walls ready for drywall, plumbing, and electrical — exactly what you need for a residential side.
Vehicle & Equipment Storage
Protect trucks, RVs, boats, and equipment from Canadian winters. Add overhead doors up to 32' wide (or 48' with mullion) and optional insulation to prevent condensation and rust.
Small Commercial
Retail shops, small offices, trade businesses, and service bays. Stud frame meets commercial building code requirements and gives you the flexibility to partition, insulate, and finish to any standard.
Farm Shops & Garages
A solid barn on the yard for equipment maintenance, welding, parts storage, and a warm place to work in January. Add a partition wall and you've got a heated bay and a cold storage side.
Hobby & Recreation
Man caves, home gyms, music studios, art studios, and indoor sport courts. Stud frame walls accept drywall, paneling, and soundproofing easily — finish the interior any way you want.

Insulation & Interior Packages
Our barn kits come in two packages — to match how you'll use the building. Cold storage barns that just need a roof and walls go with shell. If you're heating it or need interior liner for a cleaner workspace, go complete.
Shell Only
Structure, metal cladding, and trim — no insulation, no liner. You finish the interior yourself or hire your own trades.
- •Framing, trusses, sheathing
- •Metal roofing & siding
- •Complete trim package
- •Doors & walk-in doors
Complete Package
Fully insulated and lined — move-in ready for heating. This is our most popular package for heated workshops.
- •Everything in Shell, plus:
- •Walls insulated up to R35 (batt)
- •Ceiling insulated to R50 (cellulose or fiberglass)
- •6-mil poly vapour barrier
- •Interior liner (steel or OSB)
Concrete Options
We pour the concrete pad in-house — one crew, one schedule. No waiting for a separate concrete contractor.
- •Standard 4" or 5" reinforced slab
- •Thickened edge / frost wall options
- •In-floor radiant heat prep
- •Drain pits & trenches
- •Apron pads & approaches
Built to Code. Built to Last.
Metal Paint Warranty
All metal roofing and siding comes with a 40-year paint warranty. Pre-painted, baked-on coating resists fading, chalking, and peeling in Canadian conditions.
Site-Specific Engineering
Every building is engineered for its exact location. Trusses are stamped for your area's snow loads, wind loads, and soil conditions. Conforms to the National Building Code of Canada.
One Crew. One Schedule.
Our crews handle concrete, framing, roofing, siding, doors, insulation, and trim. No sub-trades, no scheduling gaps, no finger-pointing. One point of contact from start to finish.
Stud Frame FAQ
We offer barn kits in two frame types: Post Frame and Stud Frame. Post frame is the most popular for large agricultural barns — it's cost-effective with wide clear spans and fast build times. Stud frame is better if you need a heated, insulated barn with finished interior walls.
We build barns in 18 standard sizes from 30×40 (1,200 sqft) up to 80×120 (9,600 sqft). The most popular barn sizes are 40×60, 50×80, and 60×100. Custom sizes are available on request.
It depends on use. Livestock barns, heated work areas, and dairy operations benefit from insulation. Hay storage, equipment shelters, and cold storage barns typically go with a shell package — structure only, no insulation or liner.
Absolutely. Kit-only packages include all materials, engineered trusses, metal roofing and siding, hardware, and stamped structural drawings — shipped to your site. You arrange your own concrete and build crew.
Yes. Our in-house concrete crew handles the full slab — site prep, gravel, formwork, rebar, vapour barrier, and finishing. The same crew that pours the slab knows exactly what building is going on top of it.
A typical 40×60 barn takes 3–5 weeks on site. Larger barns take proportionally longer. Weather is the biggest variable. Kit-only orders ship within 2–4 weeks of deposit.
