Steel-frame construction delivers the strongest, most durable buildings we offer. Using engineered steel I-beams and purlins, this method creates clear-span interiors with zero support columns — giving you maximum usable space from wall to wall. At We Build Your Shop, our steel-frame buildings are designed for commercial operations, large-scale storage, and owners who need a building that will stand for generations.

Maximum Clear Span

No interior columns means every square foot is usable. Steel frame offers the widest open interiors of any build type — critical for commercial and industrial operations.

Built to Last Generations

Steel doesn't warp, rot, or settle. Engineered connections and galvanized components mean minimal maintenance and a building that holds its value over decades.

Commercial & Industrial Grade

Purpose-built for trucking operations, warehousing, manufacturing, large equipment storage, and any application that demands serious structural capacity.

Engineered Precision

Every steel-frame building is engineered to site-specific wind and snow loads. Pre-fabricated components ensure tight tolerances and a straight, square structure.

Best for: Commercial operations, warehousing & industrial buildings

Why Choose It

  • Maximum clear-span width — no interior columns
  • Strongest and most durable frame type available
  • Minimal maintenance — steel won't warp, rot, or settle
  • Engineered to site-specific wind and snow loads
  • Best long-term value for large commercial buildings
Good to know

Trade-Offs

  • Highest cost per square foot of all frame types
  • Requires crane for erection of main frames
  • Insulation detailing requires care to avoid condensation
What Can You Build?

Steel Frame Use Cases

Steel frame is the go-to for commercial, industrial, and large-scale projects. When you need clear-span space and engineered strength, steel is the answer.

Truck & Auto Shops

Heavy-duty vehicle maintenance, fleet storage, and repair operations. Clear-span interiors handle lifts, hoists, and large-format equipment.

Commercial Warehouses

Distribution, inventory, and logistics operations. No columns means maximum racking capacity and unobstructed forklift movement.

Manufacturing

Production lines, fabrication shops, processing plants. Steel frame supports crane systems, heavy loads, and specialized equipment mounting.

Agricultural Storage

Hay storage, seed processing, potato storage, and large equipment shelters. Steel handles the widest spans for the biggest farm operations.

Aircraft Hangars

Private and commercial aviation storage. Steel frame delivers the wide door openings, tall clearances, and structural capacity that hangars demand.

Commercial Offices

Shop-office combos, retail space, and professional facilities. Steel provides the structural base for fully finished commercial interiors.

Rigid Frame Construction

How Steel Frame Buildings Work

Pre-engineered steel buildings use rigid frame construction — solid I-beam columns and rafters connected with moment joints. Every component is precision-engineered and fabricated to exact specifications before it arrives on site.

Primary Structure

  • Steel I-beam rigid frames (columns + rafters)
  • Welded or bolted moment connections
  • Bay spacing 20'–25' between frames
  • Clear spans up to 200'+ with no interior columns
  • Engineered to site-specific wind, snow, and seismic loads

Secondary & Cladding

  • Cold-formed steel wall girts and roof purlins
  • 26-gauge pre-painted metal roofing and siding panels
  • Galvalume base coating for corrosion resistance
  • Complete trim, ridge cap, gutters, and downspouts
  • All bolts, fasteners, and sealants included
Key Advantages

Why Choose Steel Frame

Precision Assembly

Every component is pre-cut, pre-drilled, and clearly labelled at the factory. Bolt-together construction means tight tolerances, minimal waste, and a perfectly straight building.

Expandable Design

Need more space later? Remove an end wall, pour a new slab, and add 20' or 25' bays. Steel frame buildings are designed to grow with your operation.

Zero Maintenance

Steel doesn't warp, rot, crack, or settle. No painting, no treating, no replacing boards. Galvanized and painted coatings protect the exterior for decades.

Insulation Options

Insulating a Steel Frame Building

Steel conducts heat, so insulation detailing matters. Here are the options we offer for creating a comfortable, condensation-free interior.

Batt Insulation

Fiberglass batts installed between girts and purlins with a vapour barrier and interior liner. Cost-effective for standard heated shops.

Spray Foam

Closed-cell spray foam creates a continuous air and vapour barrier. Eliminates thermal bridging through steel members. Best for heated, conditioned spaces.

Insulated Metal Panels

Pre-insulated wall and roof panels with foam core. Clean, fast installation with no separate vapour barrier needed. Premium option for commercial buildings.

FAQ

Steel Frame FAQ

What is steel frame construction?

Steel frame uses engineered steel I-beams and purlins to create a rigid, clear-span structure. It's the strongest option and allows for the widest open interiors without any support columns.

When should I choose steel frame?

Steel frame is best for commercial and industrial buildings, large equipment storage, warehouses, and any application where you need maximum clear-span width and long-term structural durability.

Is steel frame more expensive?

Steel frame is typically the highest cost per square foot, but it offers the longest lifespan, lowest maintenance, and largest clear-span capability. For commercial applications, it's often the best long-term investment.

What sizes are available in steel frame?

We offer steel frame kits starting at 40×40 (1,600 sqft) up to 80×120 (9,600 sqft). Steel frame really shines in larger sizes where clear-span is critical.

Can a steel frame building be insulated?

Yes — steel frame buildings are commonly insulated with spray foam or blanket insulation between the purlins. We offer complete packages with insulation and interior liner included.

How much does a 40x60 shop cost?

A 40x60 (2,400 sqft) complete post frame kit starts at around $79,200. With installation and a turnkey concrete pad, a full build comes in around $150,000–$170,000 depending on options. Use our quote builder above for an exact number.

How much does a 50x80 shop cost?

A 50x80 (4,000 sqft) complete post frame kit starts at around $132,000. With installation and concrete, expect $220,000–$260,000 for a full turnkey build. Steel and OSBlock options are also available at different price points.

What's included in the kit price?

Complete kits include: engineered trusses at 4' O/C, 2x6 or 2x8 walls at 24" O/C, 28 gauge coloured metal roofing & siding, complete trim package, R22 wall insulation, R50 ceiling insulation, vapour barrier, interior metal liner, one walk-in door, two windows, and stamped engineered drawings. Shell kits include everything except insulation and liner.

How long does it take to build?

Depending on size, a typical build takes 2-6 weeks from concrete pour to final trim. Our crews handle everything — one timeline, one point of contact. No sub-trades, no scheduling gaps.

Can I just buy the kit and build it myself?

Absolutely. We offer kit-only supply — all materials, engineered trusses, metal, hardware, and structural drawings shipped to your site. You build it yourself or hire your own crew. Many of our clients go this route to save on labor costs.

Do you do the concrete too?

Yes — we pour our own concrete in-house. 6" thick, 32 MPa, 10M rebar at 16" O/C, thickened edges, vapour barrier, Styrofoam insulation, in-floor heat tubing, and drain pits included. One crew handles concrete and the building — no separate contractors.

What areas do you serve?

We serve Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Northwestern Ontario. Our crews travel to your site — whether you're in Winkler, Brandon, Regina, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary, or anywhere in between.

What warranty do you offer?

4-year standard workmanship warranty, 40-year warranty on metal cladding paint, and 1-year limited warranty on windows, entry doors, and overhead doors.
