A stud-frame shop is more than a storage structure — it's a true building designed for strength, comfort, and long-term use. At We Build Your Shop, our stud-frame shops are built for owners who want something solid, straight, and dependable. This construction method delivers the durability of a traditional building while offering the flexibility to customize layouts, finishes, and future upgrades.

Built for Canadian Winters

Engineered roof truss systems, proper bracing, and durable exterior materials withstand wind, heavy snow loads, and wide seasonal temperature swings.

Year-Round Comfort

Stud-frame construction allows for proper insulation depth and clean interior assemblies, resulting in a shop that can be comfortably heated and used year-round.

Customize Your Layout

Interior walls, partitions, mezzanines, and future additions are straightforward with stud framing. Plan your space the way you need it — now and down the road.

Versatile by Design

Well suited for garages, heated workspaces, equipment storage, hobby buildings, barndominiums, and small business operations.

Best for: Workshops, garages & finished interiors

Why Choose It

  • Easy to insulate and finish interior walls
  • Standardized building practice — widely understood
  • Cost-effective for smaller to mid-size spans
  • Best option for barndominiums with living quarters
  • Wide range of finishing options on 2×6 or 2×8 walls
Good to know

Trade-Offs

  • Less efficient for very large clear spans compared to steel or post frame
  • More framing labor than post frame for equivalent size
What Can You Build?

Stud Frame Use Cases

Stud frame is the most versatile construction method we offer. If you're building something that needs to be heated, finished, or lived in — stud frame is the way to go.

Heated Workshops

Year-round comfort for woodworking, auto repair, fabrication, and hobbies. 2×6 or 2×8 wall cavities give you room for serious insulation — up to R35 in the walls and R50+ in the ceiling.

Barndominiums

The #1 choice for shop-plus-living-quarters builds. Stud framing creates clean, code-compliant interior walls ready for drywall, plumbing, and electrical — exactly what you need for a residential side.

Vehicle & Equipment Storage

Protect trucks, RVs, boats, and equipment from Canadian winters. Add overhead doors up to 32' wide (or 48' with mullion) and optional insulation to prevent condensation and rust.

Small Commercial

Retail shops, small offices, trade businesses, and service bays. Stud frame meets commercial building code requirements and gives you the flexibility to partition, insulate, and finish to any standard.

Farm Shops & Garages

A solid stud frame shop on the yard for equipment maintenance, welding, parts storage, and a warm place to work in January. Add a partition wall and you've got a heated bay and a cold storage side.

Hobby & Recreation

Man caves, home gyms, music studios, art studios, and indoor sport courts. Stud frame walls accept drywall, paneling, and soundproofing easily — finish the interior any way you want.

How We Build a Stud Frame Shop

Every stud frame building from WBYS is engineered for its specific location. Trusses are stamped for your snow load, wind load, and soil conditions. Here's what goes into the structure.

Foundation & Walls

  • Continuous poured concrete foundation (we do the pad in-house)
  • 2×6 or 2×8 studs on 16" or 24" centers depending on building size
  • 2×4 interior wall strapping spaced at 24" for insulation and liner
  • Pressure treated sill plate (PWF) on all concrete contact points
  • Double top plate for truss bearing
  • Engineered headers over all door and window openings

Roof & Exterior

  • Pre-engineered trusses stamped for your specific location's loads
  • 2×6 or 2×4 purlins at 24" spacing (based on truss spacing)
  • 29ga pre-painted metal roofing and siding
  • 40-year paint warranty on all metal cladding
  • Air barrier installed under exterior metal
  • Complete trim package — ridge cap, corners, eave trim, gutters & downspouts
Doors & Windows

FAQ

Stud Frame FAQ

What is stud frame construction?

Stud frame uses traditional wood framing with 2x6 or 2x8 lumber spaced at regular intervals. It's the most common building method and provides excellent insulation options, making it ideal for heated shops and barndominiums.

Is stud frame good for heated buildings?

Yes — stud frame is the best option for heated shops. The wall cavities allow for full batt insulation plus vapour barrier, giving you excellent thermal performance in Canadian winters.

What sizes are available in stud frame?

We offer stud frame kits in 19 standard sizes from 30×30 (900 sqft) to 80×120 (9,600 sqft). Custom sizes are also available through our design tool.

Can I get a stud frame kit without installation?

Absolutely. We offer kit-only supply — all materials, engineered trusses, metal roofing and siding, hardware, and structural drawings shipped to your site. You build it yourself or hire your own crew.

How long does a stud frame build take?

Depending on size, a typical stud frame build takes 2–6 weeks from slab pour to final trim. Our crews work efficiently with one timeline and one point of contact.

How much does a 40x60 shop cost?

A 40x60 (2,400 sqft) complete post frame kit starts at around $79,200. With installation and a turnkey concrete pad, a full build comes in around $150,000–$170,000 depending on options. Use our quote builder above for an exact number.

How much does a 50x80 shop cost?

A 50x80 (4,000 sqft) complete post frame kit starts at around $132,000. With installation and concrete, expect $220,000–$260,000 for a full turnkey build. Steel and OSBlock options are also available at different price points.

What's included in the kit price?

Complete kits include: engineered trusses at 4' O/C, 2x6 or 2x8 walls at 24" O/C, 28 gauge coloured metal roofing & siding, complete trim package, R22 wall insulation, R50 ceiling insulation, vapour barrier, interior metal liner, one walk-in door, two windows, and stamped engineered drawings. Shell kits include everything except insulation and liner.

How long does it take to build?

Depending on size, a typical build takes 2-6 weeks from concrete pour to final trim. Our crews handle everything — one timeline, one point of contact. No sub-trades, no scheduling gaps.

Can I just buy the kit and build it myself?

Absolutely. We offer kit-only supply — all materials, engineered trusses, metal, hardware, and structural drawings shipped to your site. You build it yourself or hire your own crew. Many of our clients go this route to save on labor costs.

Do you do the concrete too?

Yes — we pour our own concrete in-house. 6" thick, 32 MPa, 10M rebar at 16" O/C, thickened edges, vapour barrier, Styrofoam insulation, in-floor heat tubing, and drain pits included. One crew handles concrete and the building — no separate contractors.

What areas do you serve?

We serve Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Northwestern Ontario. Our crews travel to your site — whether you're in Winkler, Brandon, Regina, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary, or anywhere in between.

What warranty do you offer?

4-year standard workmanship warranty, 40-year warranty on metal cladding paint, and 1-year limited warranty on windows, entry doors, and overhead doors.
