A farm shop isn't a luxury — it's where the work gets done. It's where you maintain equipment in January when it's -35 outside, where you store combines and tractors out of the weather, and where you keep everything organized so the operation runs smoothly. We build more farm shops than any other type, and we understand exactly what they need to handle.

What Makes a Good Farm Shop

Clearance is the first thing to get right. Modern farm equipment is tall, and if your overhead doors aren't sized properly, you'll be frustrated every time you try to pull something in. We spec 14' and 16' wall heights as standard for farm shops, with overhead doors sized to match your equipment — 16×14, 16×16, and even 20×16 are common. Drive-through layouts with doors on both ends are popular for operations that need to move equipment in and out without turning around inside.

The floor matters just as much as the walls. A properly poured concrete slab with adequate thickness and reinforcement handles the weight of loaded grain carts and combines without cracking. We pour our own slabs with rebar on a grid pattern, frost walls below the frost line, and anchor bolts at engineered spacings — because we know what's going to be parked on it.

Heated vs. Unheated

Most farm shops have two zones: a heated maintenance bay where you can actually work on equipment in winter, and unheated storage bays for seasonal equipment and vehicles. Our complete kit packages include R22 wall insulation and R50 ceiling insulation, so the heated portion is ready to go. If you want the full shop heated, in-floor heat is the best upgrade you can make — we can rough in the PEX during the concrete pour.

Recommended Frame Types

For heated, finished farm shops, stud frame gives you flat interior walls that are easy to insulate, wire, and finish. For unheated storage or large open bays, post frame keeps costs down and goes up fast. If you need maximum clear span for large equipment, steel frame eliminates interior posts entirely.

Popular Sizes

40×60 is the most popular farm shop size — enough for a maintenance bay plus equipment storage. 50×80 and 60×100 are common for larger operations that need more bays or taller clearances. We build all standard sizes from 30×30 up to 80×120, and custom sizes are available on request.
